Majoring in Mathematics

What is Math good for? Why do I need to learn this? When will I ever use this?

The answers to these questions vary from person to person, however, in one way or another we all benefit from taking math classes. Every discipline and career path benefits from the development of problem solving skills.

  • Critical Thinking: actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action.
  • Quantitative Reasoning: application of basic mathematics skills to the analysis and interpretation of real-worldinformation in the context of a discipline or an interdisciplinary problem to draw conclusions that are relevant to a person's daily life.
  • Logical processes: reasoning from one or more statements to reach a valid conclusion.
  • Procedure: a series of actions conducted in a certain order or manner.

Without thinking about it, you are going to apply some of the practices you learned in a math class whether it involves numbers or not.
