Types of Financial Aid

You may be eligible for different types of aid to help cover tuition, fees, & other college expenses. Here’s a brief overview of the financial aid options available:

Federal & State Grants

Grants are need-based financial aid that do not have to be repaid.

  • Federal Pell Grant – Up to $7,395 per year (2024-2025) based on financial need and enrollment status.

  • SEOG (Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant) – A $600 grant for students with $0 Expected Family Contribution (EFC) (limited funds, first-come, first-served).

  • Cal Grant (A, B, C) – State-funded grants for California residents who qualify based on financial need and academic requirements.

  • Student Success Completion Grant (SSCG) – Additional funding for full-time students to help them complete their degrees faster.

  • Chafee Grant – Up to $5,000 per year for current or former foster youth to help with college and living expenses.

  • Students with Dependent Children (SWD) Grant – Provides up to $6,000 extra for Cal Grant recipients with children under 18.

How to Apply: Submit the FAFSA or CA Dream Act Application by March 2nd (or September 2nd for some Community College Cal Grants).


California College Promise Grant Fee Waiver (CCPG)

Formerly known as the BOG Fee Waiver, this program waives the $46 per unit enrollment fee for eligible California residents attending a community college.

  • How to Apply: Submit the FAFSA, CA Dream Act Application, or apply directly through your college’s financial aid office.

Work-Study

The Federal Work-Study (FWS) Program provides part-time job opportunities to students with financial need. This allows students to earn money while gaining work experience.

  • How to Apply: Indicate interest in Work-Study when completing the FAFSA.

Student Loans

Loans are borrowed money that must be repaid with interest.

  • Federal Direct Subsidized Loan – Need-based loan where interest is covered by the government while in school.

  • Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan – Not based on financial need; interest accrues immediately.

  • Parent PLUS Loan – For parents of dependent students to help cover educational costs.

  •  How to Apply: Submit the FAFSA and complete loan entrance counseling if required.

Scholarships

Scholarships are gift aid that does not need to be repaid. They can be awarded based on academic achievement, financial need, leadership, or other qualifications.
