Instructions on How to Complete Guided Self-Placement:

  1. Sign on to CLASS-Web and click on the “Steps to Success” tab.
  2. Under “Select Campus Option,” choose Las Positas College.
  3. Select the Guided Self-Placement of your choice:
    • English Guided Self-Placement
    • Math Guided Self-Placement
    • Foreign Language Self-Placement
  4. Answer all of the questions provided in the self-placement tool.
  5. Note: Once you have completed the guided self-placement, please allow 48 hours for your results to be updated on your CLASS-Web account. If you have any questions during the assessment, please contact the Assessment Center.

If your cumulative, unweighted GPA from a U.S. high school is 2.5 or above, it is recommended to take English 1A independently. However, if your high school GPA is below 2.5 or you believe you could benefit from additional support in college-level English for any reason, we strongly encourage the following options:

Summer 2024:

  • English 1AEX: A 4-unit course with additional lab hours for enhanced support and practice. English 1AEX is equivalent to English 1A in terms of transferability.

Fall 2024 - Spring 2025:

  • NENG 215: A tuition-free non-credit personalized coaching course, or its 0.5-credit version, ENG 115.

Students may also choose to enroll in a non-credit ESL course to support their English 1A studies. For information on ESL assessment, please refer to the left-hand menu. Details on NESL courses can be found in the college catalog, accessible from the left-hand menu as well.

If you obtained a G.E.D. or a diploma from a high school outside the U.S. and are uncertain about the best course options for you, it is recommended to schedule a session with a counselor for personalized guidance.

High school graduates will self-place into the appropriate mathematics class using three criteria: their cumulative, unweighted grade point average, the highest-level mathematics course completed, and the grade received in that course.

  • After completing the Guided Self Placement for Math, students may be given a requirement or recommendation to take a support course, based on their highest successfully completed math class in high school and their cumulative high school GPA.
  • Requirements and recommendations are based on whether the student is planning to take a BSTEM (Business, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), SLAM (Statistics and Liberal Arts Mathematics) or Calculus course.
  • Support course: Students may choose to enroll in Math Jam or Concurrent Support, or both.
