English Support Options
If you think that you will need to access support at LPC so that you can reach your full potential, please make room in your schedule to take advantage of the following resources:
Option 1: Your Instructor
One great place to start if you need help is to contact your instructor. All full-time and many part-time instructors have weekly office hours, and their syllabi will tell you when they are and how to contact your instructor to make alternate arrangements if you cannot meet during those times.
Option 2: A Tuition-Free Non-Credit NENG 215 or a .5-Unit Credit ENG 115.
This course will provide regular, individualized, and small-group coaching support while taking English 1A. It is designed to support students through the rigor of college English.
Option 3: RAW (Reading and Writing) Center
The RAW Center is a drop-in tutoring service (no appointments) staffed by LPC English faculty, who can help with reading and writing assignments for any class. It offers FREE face-to-face, synchronous online, or paper drop-off service. See https://www.laspositascollege.edu/raw for the schedule and link to our tutoring and paper drop-off platform.
The RAW Center is open seven days a week: Online or live, in-person help is available for at least one hour but often four hours per day, depending on the day. The in-person help is either in 21253, the library, the BCRC, or the Veterans Center, depending on the day and time. You can also access the RAW Center online/paper drop-off via the Penji app. To get there, download the app, visit the RAW website, or click on “LPC Tutoring/RAW” from any of your Canvas courses.
RAW Highlights:
- free, 20-minute, drop-in tutoring with LPC English or ESL faculty
- help on reading and reading strategies for any class
- help on any stage of the writing process for any class
Option 3: Tutoring Center
If your instructor recommends that you see a tutor on a weekly basis and it is at all possible, please follow through on this recommendation. You can also request a tutor on your own, whether weekly or on a drop-in basis. Tutoring at LPC is FREE. The Tutoring Center is in 21215. You may get both scheduled and drop-in tutoring. For more information, go to www.laspositascollege.edu/tutorialcenter.
Option 4: Smart Shop Workshops
Smart Shops are workshops that can help you refresh a variety of reading and writing skills, such as paraphrasing, summarizing, thesis writing, integrating quotes, and other skills. Consult the workshop calendar for topics and location, whether Zoom or in person.
Option 5: Study Group
Sometimes having a group of classmates to study and/or read with can be another great support system to help you succeed. You can introduce yourself to other students in class, ask your instructor for help in setting up a study group, or use Canvas to contact other students through email or the Discussions forum. The library and the Tutoring Center are great places to study, and both have private study rooms with white boards available.
