1. What are Pathway Student Success Teams (PSSTs)?
Goals of Pathway Student Success Teams is to enhance the college experience and career preparation for all students by providing clear pathway course sequencing, key milestone information, and proactive and intentional support within each of our 7 Academic & Career Pathways (plus our 8th “Undecided”). PSSTs will utilize accessible and inclusive support services for all students and promote timely completion of transfer, degree, and career-technical goals to reduce equity gaps.
Pathway Student Success Team Members may include faculty, classified professionals, administrators, and student mentors who collaborate and implement data-informed and equity-infused practices, organized around our Academic & Career Pathways, plus Undecided. As a student-centered institution, each one of us are key members of a student’s success team, however not all of us will officially serve on one of our Academic and Career Pathways’ PSST! Although team models may vary as we use a phased-in approach to PSST, the student experience is central to the design.
Phases of PSSTs. We will have a phased approach to PSST, with each phase moving our goal forward by providing clear academic and holistic support in our Academic & Career Pathways. Phases will be driven by infrastructure to support work strategically transforming into sustained, interactive and proactive work that makes supporting students easier and our work and time streamlined.
Phase One: Started Fall 2023:
- Pathway Website to organize key supports for student success
- Pathway Student Success Teams on website
- Counseling Faculty all assigned a Pathway and 2.5 weekly hours dedicated to GP work (contract) using student data sets, disaggregated by demographics to reduce equity gaps
- Not-Awarded Degree Project and outreach for students without a Comprehensive SEP
- Discipline Faculty designate an office hour for Pathway Support
- Outreach Specialists on a pathway
Phase Two: Starting Fall 2024:
- Canvas shells for communication and support
- Pathways each create a welcome letter that includes information about Program & Careers in this area, faculty and holistic supports
- Persistence & Caring Campus behavior reminders nudges are emailed out to all faculty, timed out according to effective engagement with reinforced messages to Divisions by GP Steering Committee Representatives
- Engagement Events have Pathway specific tables with pathway specific information and meet & greet opportunities
- Expand integration of student data points with the implementation of Ellucian Advise, disaggregated by demographics to reduce equity gaps, into the Counseling workflow
Future Phases of PSSTs will move us closer to providing proactive and intentional support for students, data-informed and equity-infused practice, supported by technological infrastructure that supports communication and collaboration. Additional phases will provide increased opportunities for students to discover, clarify, and enter their pathway, enhanced belonging and intentional support to persist and succeed in achieving their academic and career goals.
2. PSST Member Roles and Responsibilities
What will the expectations be?
Phase 1 PSSTs will encourage a focus on supporting students along their Academic & Career Pathway. Counselors will strengthen relationships with faculty and staff in their Pathway and students can request and meet counselors with some consistency who are “experts” in their area of interest. Counselors will intentionally focus on increasing the number of students with Education Plans within their assigned Pathway. Discipline faculty from each Pathways have chosen to dedicate at least one of their 5 required office hours to provide academic and holistic support to students in their Pathway, and a soft-handshake to campus resources. Additional team members will also identify themselves as a resource to students via the Pathway website(s).
Future Phases will focus on the infrastructure the PSSTs will utilize to provide proactive and intentional communication and support for students, with student data organized by Pathway and demographics. PSSTs will focus on understanding the entire student experience in their Pathway, provide clear and integrated support, and promote opportunities to foster fellowship among students. Future phases will provide team time to collaborate on equity-infused practice and implement intentional cohort and/or individual student in-reach.
