Definition of Student Success Team or SST

How would you describe a student success team? Generally speaking, a student success team is an academic, student and administrative services team that collaborates to plan and implement data-informed, equity-infused practices and holistic support along the student journey.  Teams often use a case management approach, an inquiry process, or a combination of both.  This is our year to define which is the LPC way.

Definition of a Community of Practice or CoP

What is a CoP (Community of Practice)?  A community of practice, CoP, is a group of people who share a common concern, a set of problems or interest in a topic and who come together to fulfill the goals of the group.

Communities of Practice 2022-2023

Our 2022 - 2023 CoP:  With an equity and belonging focus, Pathway Student Success Team (PSST) and campus members will collaborate on how to best support students in our Academic and Career Pathways.  We will reflect on data and lessons from PSST Phase One and plan for implementation of future phases.

Join us on the 4th Fridays of the month from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.

Communities of Practice 2021-2022

Our 2021 - 2022 CoP: With an equity and belonging focus, we will learn from the experts on our campus and community to inform the creation of success teams at LPC that embrace our culture and enhance our student needs.

January 28, 2022 – Summary Discussion and Next Steps

Our fourth Community of Practice was a recap and summary of everything we discussed and learned last semester. The information collected in the first three communities of practice framed the work that will take place this semester in Spring 2022. Two main areas of work to be completed this semester were: Pathway work and Student Success Team work. Pathway work is related to the infrastructure necessary to support the Student Success Team model, whereas Student Success Tea work was identified as the strategic and intentional interventions necessary for the Student Success Teams to run.

With these two main areas in mind, our goal for the Spring 2022 semester will be to create a student-facing milestone timeline, develop websites and Canvas sites for each Academic and Career pathway, and to work with our IT department to develop and utilize the Ellucian Advise Dashboards.

October 22, 2021 – Career and Community Engagement and Networking

Our third Community of Practice was our most attended, with many campus and community members joining in.  Employers and Employment resources in our community want to connect with our students but are struggling to do so.  Pathway communication could help bridge this divide. Success Teams can ensure that all students know about the resources and opportunities that already exist, to capitalize on our community partners and needs in an intentional way to all students, organized around areas of interest, that can take the luck out of the student finding the resource.

In case you missed it, here is a recap of what we discussed:

September 24, 2021 – Belonging

Our second Community of Practice had lively conversations, thanks to the many students and practitioners who came to discuss! We know from research that one main factor that inhibits students’ completion and transfer capacity that we need to address is "Who on my campus cares about my success?"  Research has shown that having a sense of belonging -with peers, or in the classroom, or on campus- contributes to college success and well-being, particularly for marginalized students. We heard more themes that support a concierge model for Success Teams - PROACTIVE and flexible communication, EXPLICIT opportunities, DIVERSE ways be be involved that are brought to the student, rather than the student having to find their way to the resources, clubs, or situations to forge connections with their classmates, their instructors, and their major’s pathway.

In case you missed it, here is a recap of what we discussed:

August 27th, 2021 – Equity

Our first Community of Practice was a huge success! There were many great conversations and great opportunities for learning about equity as it relates to the student experience from experts and students across our campus.

In case you missed it, here is a recap of what we discussed:

Please join us next month on September 24, 2021 at 1:30pm when we will be discussing Belonging.

LPC's Community Of Practice around Student Success Teams

The Student Expereince

Outcomes for our Community of Practice Sessions are...

  • To take an inventory of what we are doing well across campus to support our students and ensure equity and belonging.
  • To dream about what we would like to see and do.
  • To design the foundation of success teams that will enhance the student experiences that are built with our students, campus culture, strengths and desires at the forefront. Specifically, success teamwork will be focused on reducing the achievement gaps for all of our students.
