Dr. John Shirley, former Livermore Mayor ...
Brief Summary of Dr. John Shirley:
John B. Shirley (1924–2021) was a decorated World War II combat veteran, veterinarian, former Livermore mayor and longtime community leader whose life was defined by service. After serving with the U.S. Army’s 3rd Infantry Division in Italy, France, and Germany, he returned home and earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from UC Davis. He and his wife, Helen, moved to Livermore in 1954, where he established a veterinary practice and became deeply involved in civic and veterans’ affairs. From serving on the Livermore City Council and as mayor to supporting veterans, students, and community organizations, “Doc Shirley” dedicated decades to making Livermore a better place. His legacy continues through the Dr. John Shirley Council Chambers, veterans’ programs, scholarships, and the many lives he touched through his commitment to service.
