Online Course Development Program

The purpose of LPC's Online Course Development Program (OCDP) is to train faculty to design, develop, and teach high-quality online courses that meet our contractual and accreditation standards.

Typically, participants design their first online course over one semester while completing the OCDP, and then teach the course the following semester.

What will I learn?

The OCDP is an asynchronous online course with ten modules you can work through at your own pace. Work through each module in order, completing quizzes designed to check for understanding and assignments that build up to your final assessment - the beginning of your own online course in a Canvas Sandbox.

  • Module 1: Introduction to Online Learning
    • Content includes an overview of Canvas, Distance Education at LPC, the CVC Online Course Design Rubric, and models of online courses.
  • Module 2: Online Course Design
    • Content includes a closer look at the CVC Online Course Design Rubric, with a focus on effective and equitable course design strategies. Instructors learn about our optional Model course template, and begin building an online course in a Sandbox.
  • Module 3: Planning Your Course
    • Content includes a focus on writing clear objectives for students that align with SLOs and learning activities.
  • Module 4: Teaching Online
    • Content includes a focus on student engagement, including requirements and strategies for meeting regular and substantive interaction in online classes.
  • Module 5: Web Accessibility
    • Content includes a focus on web accessibility & Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
  • Module 6: Adding Content
    • Content includes a focus on adding Instructional content, including textbook publisher content and Open Educational Resources, with attention to copyright laws.
  • Module 7: Designing Collaborative Activities
    • Content focuses on ways to foster collaboration in online courses through discussions, wikis, and other group activities.
  • Module 8: Online Assessment
    • Content focuses on online assignments, assessments, and academic integrity strategies. Instructors learn to use rubrics and other strategies to provide meaningful feedback to students.
  • Module 9: Classroom Management
    • Content focuses on analytics and user management strategies in online classes.
  • Module 10: The Homestretch
    • Content includes tips for finalizing the design of your Sandbox course, along with more information about the LPC course review and evaluation process. Information about our Peer Online Course Review program is included for faculty interested in fully aligning an online course to the CVC Online Course Design Rubric in the future.

How do I sign up?

Email Instructional Technology Coordinator Kathleen King.  She will add you to the OCDP course and make sure you have a Sandbox to begin designing your own online course.

What else should I know before starting?

  • All new online courses must be developed in Canvas, using the district’s Canvas server.
  • No monetary incentives are currently being offered for completing the OCDP.
  • Work closely with your Dean to ensure the course you want to teach online has been approved to be offered online by LPC's Curriculum Committee and that this online course fits in with your area's discipline plan.
  • Learn more about the online course review and online course evaluation process for new instructors.

What support is available?

Although the OCDP is an asynchronous online training, this doesn't mean you don't have support and feedback along the way!  You can find drop-in support or book an appointment with the Instructional Technology team in the Teaching and Learning Center.
