About the Program

LGBTQ studies is a unique program that allows students to study multiple academic areas alongside one another with a focus on sexuality, gender, and queer communities from a cross-cultural perspective. With this major, gender and sexuality will be treated as a critical element of the humanities and social sciences. You will study gender and sexuality critically, examining its role in history, art, literature, sociology, public health, and psychology, among other fields. You will gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be LGBTQ+ today. Art, music, politics, psychology, philosophy, literature, and ethnic studies film studies, ethnic studies (Black Studies, Chicano/Latinx studies, Indigenous Nations and Native American Studies) will all be part of your studies. If you plan to obtain a master’s degree in ethnic studies, psychology, social work, or sociology, this major offers a solid background for a career working with this population. You don’t have to be LGBTQ+ to study this area - this major is open to all.

About the Degree

The Associate in Arts in Social Justice Studies: LGBTQ Studies for Transfer is designed for prospective California State University (CSU) transfer students who are preparing for careers in the field of Social Justice Studies: LGBTQ Studies. Completion of the Social Justice Studies: LGBTQ Studies Transfer degree will provide a streamlined pathway for transfer to a CSU campus with a Social Justice Studies: LGBTQ Studies or similar major. Examples of CSU majors include American Studies, Gender Studies, Liberal Studies w/ Option in Interdisciplinary Studies in Culture & Society, Sociology - Concentration in Race, Class, and Gender, Sociology with Inequalities and Diversity Option, Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and Women's Studies.

Career Opportunities

There has been a significant number of high-impact jobs working with the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer populations much longer than there has been an entire major on which to build a foundation for those jobs. Those with a degree in this area work in public health, public policy, healthcare, education, marketing, human resources, journalism, community activism, visual and performing arts, and social work.

Transferability

Las Positas College offers an AA-T (Associate of Arts for Transfer) degree which guarantees junior status upon admission to UC/CSU. All LGBTQ studies courses articulate as lower-division units to UC/CSU.
