What is the deal with INTR, INTZ, INTL??

The AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE AND INTRODUCTION class can be taken in two different ways depending on the scheduling of classes. INTR is four units and contains both lecture and lab in one class. INTZ is two units and lecture only. INTL is two units and lab only. INLZ and INTL must be taken at the same time and are the same and equal to INTR.

How long does it take to complete the program?

The program's completion will normally take between four and five semesters, depending on your entrance qualifications and semester schedule.

What does it cost?

Much more reasonable than "technical schools," California residents pay a low per-unit fee for classes. Classes are $46 per unit. Enrollment fees are due at registration and are subject to change. Refer to the current class schedule for specific charges. Financial assistance is available.

Do I need to purchase tools?

Students attending LPC's automotive classes are provided with the necessary tools to complete all required lab activities. Full-time students are eligible to purchase Snap-On, Mac, or Matco professional toolsets at a substantial discount (currently 55% off) and are encouraged to do so before seeking employment.

What will I receive when I finish the program?

Successful Las Positas College students can earn a certificate or AS degree.

How do I get started?

Am I required to get a degree?

Certificate programs do not require a degree, but you are encouraged to pursue academic classes. Taking classes such as math, science, and English will support automotive training and give you a chance to meet other students. An AS degree can be transferred to a university in order to pursue advanced degrees.

What majors are available should I decide to transfer to a university with an automotive technology degree?

Several majors are available such as a BS in Service Management or a BS in Industrial Technology. There is tremendous demand for graduates of these programs.

Are there opportunities available to graduates besides positions as automotive technicians?

Many go on to become dispatchers, service writers, parts and service managers, service directors, and general managers at the dealership: automotive instructors, zone managers, technical support, factory personnel, and numerous other positions.

I do not have any experience with cars. How much do I need to know before I enroll in classes?

You do not need any automotive experience to enroll in auto classes at Las Positas College. The classes are designed to accommodate beginners as well as experienced technicians. If you have not taken an automotive class before, you can enroll in Auto INTR – AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE AND INTRODUCTION. This is an entry-level class that will give you the background needed to succeed in the other classes.

I was never good at math or science. Do I need a high level of skill in these areas?

The necessary math and science concepts are taught along with the technology in the automotive classes. If you barely passed Algebra or have never taken a science class, you can still do well in the Automotive Program. You will need basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) and know how to work with decimals, fractions, and converting standard and metric measurements. If you need help with the basics, Las Positas College has a wonderful Tutorial Center where you can get up to speed quickly.

I like knowing about cars, but I do not want to spend every day getting dirty. Do I have to work in a shop to use my knowledge?

There are many jobs in which you can use your knowledge that does not require crawling under a car every day. Repair technician jobs are only one small piece of the auto industry. The Service Writer works directly with the technicians, so automotive understanding is essential. However, they also work in the office with the customers, explaining the problems, the testing procedures, and the results. Management in dealerships, body shops or parts suppliers, technical writers, work in design and development, or automotive marketing. There are also government jobs, such as the Bureau of Automotive Repair, which oversees repair shops in California.

I want a college degree. Can I get one through the Automotive Program?

Students can choose to obtain a certificate of completion through the Automotive Program at Las Positas College. They can earn an Associate's Degree in Automotive Technology by taking auto classes and meeting their general education requirements. Some of our students have obtained Bachelor's degrees in Business, Engineering, and other disciplines.
