Tips for Success
- Sign up for all housing interest lists and waitlists. You can go to your city's website to find housing as well as utilize the websites we have listed. If there are any organizations that allow to you sign up for email alerts then make sure you subscribe to those alerts and be sure to check your email regularly.
- Sign up for all housing interest lists and waitlists regardless of your current housing status. This will provide a more consistent stream of housing opportunities as well as provide a back-up plan in case an emergency housing crisis were to occur.
- Make sure to answer all unknown calls during your housing search so as not to miss a potential opportunity. Housing organizations will remove your name and go to the next person on the waitlist if you do not respond quickly. Make sure you can answer calls, check your voicemail often, and call back immediately if you are still searching for stable housing.
- Always follow up on all your housing interests. This includes follow- up phone calls or other correspondence to housing authorities regardless of whether or not you are on a housing list of any kind. The extra work you put into following up on a consistent basis could lead to a faster result.
- Read and review all sections of these housing resource webpages so you can be the best candidate should housing opportunities arise.
- Look for housing solutions on alternative sites, such as Facebook marketplace or Craigslist. Please remember to be cautious when utilizing these searches as they may not provide the same protections a housing complex or housing authority would provide. See disclaimer below.
