Recycling and Composting

 

There currently is an effort to create a Zero Waste Campus at both Chabot and Las Positas College. This effort has been supported by the use of outside funding to hire "Climate Fellows" who are actively working on each campus with District Custodial Services. 

It should be noted that recycling and composting at LPC has been historically, and continues to be, a challenging process to document progress, institutionalize good practices, and understand its effectiveness. LPC currently has a wide range of trash receptacles in our outdoor spaces and within buildings.

Positive

• Cardboard compactor in-use
• Composting Earth Bin is operational
• New 3-Stream receptacles being situated
• Zero Waste Initiatives ongoing.

Challenges

1. Wide array of trash receptacles
2. New 3 stream recycling bins are new and few in comparison to other types
3. Unclear where non-3 stream recycling is routed

Zero Waste Initiatives

 

Current priorities include:

1. Finalize the Zero Waste flyer and educational materials. The distribution to students, employees, and the broader campus communities at both colleges.
2. Identify strategic locations for posting educational materials. Identify high-traffic and high-impact locations at both campuses where the Zero Waste flyers and signage will be most visible and effective.
3. Coordinate digital communication and outreach. Work with Student Services and the Marketing and Communications teams at both colleges to distribute the Zero Waste information through appropriate digital channels.
4. Develop and adopt our data collection and reporting process. Establish a consistent procedure for collecting and documenting Zero Waste data, including the data collection form, reporting format, graphical representation of results, and a process for communicating outcomes to District leadership, including the Vice Chancellor, as well as appropriate California state stakeholders.
