Enrollment Limitations

Students should consult the course descriptions in this Catalog for course prerequisites, corequesites, and other enrollment limitations or the current Class Schedule.

Numbering System

  • 1-99 are Bachelor’s level, generally transferable.
  • 100-299 are not degree-applicable nor transferable.
  • 29 are Independent Study courses.
  • 100-149 are Basic Skills* courses.
  • 200-299 Noncredit courses.

*Students may not receive more than 30 semester units for pre-collegiate basic skills courses. ESL and learning disabled students are exempt.

Common Course Numbering System (CCN)

  • The Common Course Numbering (CCN) System is a state-mandated initiative (AB1111) aimed at simplifying student transfer and ensuring uniformity in course numbers across California Community Colleges.
  • Starting Fall 2025, LPC will switch some courses to a new course numbering system. This new system, called the Common Course Numbering (CCN) system, will use the following structure:
    • Subject: Four letter abbreviation (e.g., ENGL for English).
    • Course Number: Standardized 5 character course identification; lead character is a C followed by 4-digits (e.g., C1000).

Course Notation

Courses in this Catalog are annotated with the course subject (abbreviation) used on LPC transcripts, e.g., Theater (THEA).

Course Description Annotations

The courses in this Catalog are annotated with codes to identify:

  • Grading Option
  • Transfer status to baccalaureate-degree institutions
  • General Education pattern and area applicability

The following information explains how to interpret these codes.

The grading option for a course is indicated as follows:

  • OP May be taken for a letter grade or pass/no pass or satisfactory progress (noncredit only)
  • GR Must be taken for a letter grade only
  • P/NP Must be taken for pass/no pass only
  • P/NP/SP Must be taken for pass/no pass/satisfactory progress only

The General Education pattern option for a course is indicated as follows:

  • Cal-GETC California General Education Transfer Curriculum
  • AA/AS GE Las Positas College Associate of Arts/Science Degree

General Education

The General Education (GE) pattern annotation will be followed by the applicable area. For example: Cal-GETC: 3B means the course satisfies Area 3B on the Cal-GETC pattern.
