Mission & Goals

Mission

The Veterans First Program addresses the needs of student veterans, service members, and dependents on campus. Social isolation is indeed a significant issue that many veterans face when transitioning to civilian life and entering college. The Veterans First Program provides a supportive environment where student veterans can connect with one another and feel a sense of belonging.

The VFP’s initiatives, such as the Student Veterans Organization (SVO) and the various services and resources offered, can play a vital role in combating social isolation. By providing opportunities for student military affiliates to interact and engage with each other, the VFP helps foster a community of individuals who share similar experiences and challenges. This sense of camaraderie and connection can alleviate feelings of isolation and provide a support network for veterans on campus.

In addition to promoting social connections, transitioning from a military environment to a college setting can be daunting, and veterans may face unique challenges in adapting to academic life. By offering tailored support services, resources, and a dedicated space for veterans, the VFP can assist veterans in navigating the transition process, accessing academic resources, and achieving their educational goals.

The combination of in-person support, virtual assistance via zoom Virtual Welcome Center, and Cranium Café virtual services demonstrates the commitment to reaching and supporting veterans in various ways. This multi-faceted approach ensures that veterans can access the assistance they need, regardless of their circumstances or preferences.

Overall, the VFP's efforts to address social isolation and support the successful transition and education of veterans are commendable. By providing a centralized hub and a range of services and resources, the VFP plays a vital role in fostering a supportive community and enhancing the well-being and academic success of student military affiliates on campus.

Las Positas College is a member of the

Principles of Excellence program

The Principles of Excellence program requires schools that get federal funding through programs such as the GI Bill to follow certain guidelines. Learn about these guidelines.

Schools that are a part of the program must:

  • Give you a written personal summary of the total cost of your educational program, including:
    • The costs covered by your benefits.
    • The financial aid you may qualify for.
    • Your expected student-loan debt after you graduate.
    • Other information to help you compare aid packages offered by different schools.
  • Give you an educational plan with a timeline showing how and when you can fulfill everything required for you to graduate.
  • Assign you a point of contact who will give you ongoing academic and financial advice (including access to disability counseling).
  • Allow for you to be gone for both long and short periods of time due to service obligations (service you must fulfill) for active-duty service members and Reservists.
  • Make sure all new programs are accredited (officially approved) before enrolling students.
  • Make sure their refund policies follow Title IV rules, which guide federal student financial aid programs.
  • End fraudulent (deceitful) and aggressive methods of recruiting.
