Bienvenidos: Welcome to the Spanish for Spanish Speakers Instructional Web site

If you are a Spanish speaker and are interested in studying Spanish through culture, history, politics, economics and literature, this program is for you. We offer Spanish speakers two courses: Spanish 21 in the Fall Semester and Spanish 22 in the Spring Semester. This is an interactive program designed to provide students with the opportunity to:

  • develop critical and integrative thinking skills
  • revitalize and expand the Spanish skills students already have
  • enhance students' understanding and appreciation of Hispanic culture and sociopolitical realities
  • examine, compare and recognize different regional language variations
  • improve strategic speaking, reading, and writing skills
  • understand historical and cultural influences on language
  • examine the role language and culture play on a person's academic and personal formation
  • master grammar points of particular concern to bilingual and heritage Spanish speakers

Spanish 21: Goals and Objectives

By the end of the semester, students should be able to write compositions of at least 500 words demonstrating correct spelling, punctuation, cohesion between sentences and paragraphs, use advanced grammatical structures and appropriate register, derive meaning through context, demonstrate to have adopted and expanded vocabulary and identify similarities and differences among distinct varieties of Spanish.

  • Nuevos mundos:Cuaderno de español para bilingües, by Ana Roca, third edition, Wiley 2012

We cover the first four chapters from Nuevos mundos.

  • Chapter 1: La presencia hispana en los Estados Unidos
  • Chapter 2: Los mexicoamericanos
  • Chapter 3: Los puertorriqueños
  • Chapter 4: Los cubanos y los cubanoamericanos

Spanish 22: Goals and Objectives

By the end of the semester, students should be able to write compositions of at least 1000 words demonstrating improved application of grammar, orthography and register in writing and speaking, examine, compare, and value the regional and stylistic differences used throughout the Spanish speaking world, express ideas and opinions on various topics using vocabulary and diction appropriate to context, compare and contrast the value of the contributions Spanish speaking communities have made in the United States, and read a variety of Spanish texts and be able to identify the main idea, supporting details, and draw conclusions from the readings.

  • Chapter 7: La mujer y la cultura
  • Chapter 8: Cruzando puentes: El poder de la palabra, la imagen y la música, 327
