Horticulture
The Horticulture curriculum is designed to meet the demand for trained personnel in a broad range of horticultural fields. The Horticulture program offers an Associate of Science degree and Certificates of Achievement in several fields: ornamental horticulture, landscape maintenance and construction, and landscape design. Successful completion of any of these Certificates of Achievement in Horticulture provides students with skills profi ciency for entry-level jobs. The Associate of Science (AS) Degree is recommended for students who wish to transfer to 4-year institutions. Students with the AS degree will also have demonstrated a broader educational basis and writing ability that can give them an advantage for promotional opportunities in the future.

In addition, the Horticulture Department at Las Positas College offers short-term, tuition-free, noncredit courses and a skills program designed to provide students both educational and vocational opportunities. A certificate will not only validate participation in the program, but it will also enhance the opportunities to secure gainful entry-level employment. The program is open to all and specifically designed for students that have difficulty in a traditional classroom setting.

Students might work in residential and commercial landscape installation and maintenance; urban tree service; forestry; park, grounds, and golf course maintenance; landscape installation and maintenance & nursery management and operations; floristry; plant pest control and horticulture consulting; and landscape design.
