MLEA subcommittee is committed to providing students with the foundation and supports they need to achieve their goals, especially while enrolled in our math and language courses. For many of our students, this means strengthening basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. Data show that this strengthening of skills should be done in transfer-level coursework with lateral instead of pre-requisite support. While Assembly Bill 705 mandated that we maximize the potential that students complete transfer math and English in one year, Assembly Bill 1705 has strengthened that mandate, disallowing pre-requisite coursework under almost all circumstances, excepting ESL and DSPS support courses. Mathematics programs must now study the impact of reducing transfer-level math coursework and support the placement of students into the correct mathematics course for their major. The goal of both laws are to increase transfer rates for all students, but they are particularly focused on those students who have been disproportionately impacted by systems, whether in the classroom, discipline, placement, or student services realms, that erect barriers to their learning and their ultimate success. For students in ESL courses, AB705 wants to see ESL students with a transfer goal complete transfer-level English in three years.
Las Positas College Equity Statement
Las Positas College will achieve equity by changing the impacts of structural racism, ableism, homophobia, and systematic poverty on student success and access to higher education, achieved through continuous evaluation and improvement of all services. We believe in a high-quality education focused on learning and an inclusive, culturally-relevant environment that meets the diverse needs of all our students.
LPC Equity Definition: Equity is parity in student educational outcomes. It places student success and belonging for students of color and disproportionately impacted students at the center of focus.
