Located in building 2100 on the 1st floor, the English Center houses a lab reserved for students who have English classes in the center.
Meet Our Team
Our Instructional Assistants support certain English courses scheduled in the center. Please note that our Instructional Assistants do not offer assistance to all students taking an English course. For reading and writing support, please meet with a RAW tutor, meet with a tutor on a weekly basis through the Tutorial Center, and/or attend a SmartShop.
NoËl fagerhaugh (She/her)
Senior Instructional Assistant
- MA in English Literature with a concentration in Writing Pedagogies from Mills College
- BA in English Literature with a concentration in Diasporic Literatures from Mills College
Noël is a native born Oaklander, First Generation College Graduate, Writing Teacher, Poet, Artist, Dog Mom, and Gardener. She taught English Classes and support sections at Merritt and Laney Colleges from 2015-2023. She was also a student for two years at Laney before transferring to Mills College. There Noël received her Bachelor's and Master's degree in English Literature and Writing Pedagogies. She's also spent years in the metal arts field and in local environmental non-profits. Noël has also held seats on Academic and Classified Senates. This year at Las Positas she is the newest Classified Senate Ambassador and a member of the 2024-2025 CLIP cohort for advancement of Classified Leadership. Feel free to ask Noël about any details from her many career paths, anytime!

Instructional Assistant
- MFA in Creative Writing, San Francisco State University
- MA in English: concentration in Creative Writing, San Francisco State University
- BA in Journalism: minor in English, San Diego State University
Gaia's teaching and tutoring background includes: Adjunct Faculty at De Anza College & The Art Institutes of California 2014-2015, Literacy Tutor at Belfast Metropolitan College (Northern Ireland) 2016-2018, Adjunct Faculty at Santa Rosa Junior College 2019-2021, and English Tutor/Creative Writing Instructor for Mills College Upward Bound. She enjoys traveling, attending music and literary events, writing nonfiction and fiction. Some of her favorite books are Notes of a Native Son by James Baldwin, Just Kids by Patti Smith, Stay True by Hua Hsu. Gaia is from Santa Rosa, CA and now resides in San Francisco.
Instructional Assistants in the English Center
Depending on the course*, they:
- provide learning assistance to students individually or in small groups
- facilitate grammar workshops
- direct students to appropriate college resources, such as academic counseling, DSPS,
the health center, and additional tutoring services.
